Come On Baby Light My Wand

Do any of youse guys own the HP light up wands? Like this one?

My son has wanted one ever since he saw it in the Skymall catalog. I was going to get him one for Christmas, and if I get him one I'll have to get his little sister one too. Otherwise, how will they be able to chase each other around the house yelling "stupefy!"?

Alivans has one that is much cheaper and made of plastic. Unfortunately there is only one style, which will result in a lot of "you have my wand!" nonsense. The collectible ones are made of wood and resin, and you can get Harry's or Hermione's or whoever.

The collectible one says "This is not a toy! Fragile! blah blah blah blah!"

If you have one, how fragile is it? Should I stick with the plastic ones, because it *will* get a lot of use and probably stepped on and slightly chewed by the dog.

Shameless Proud Mama Bragging Moment

My son just finished reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

*basks*

Not bad, for six and a half. I told him a long time ago that in order to watch a Harry Potter movie, he had to read the book first. Last year I tried reading the book aloud to him, but that ended in frustration with about a third of the first chapter completed. He just couldn't pay attention, and had a hard time getting past why the story was about Harry at the Dursley's, and not about Hogwarts.

Sometime this Spring he saw some girls on his school bus reading Harry Potter, and decided he would do the same. I didn't think he would actually do it, but more often than not he got off the bus carrying the book, his bookmark a couple pages farther along each time. The library summer reading program helped spur him further as he insisted (in the beginning) on reading for 30 minute stretches at a time (he has finally accepted that he can read 15 minutes here, 15 minutes there, and still color in a square to get him to his goal). Most recently he has been reading it before bed with his dad.

I know that there are broader concepts he didn't quite understand, and he struggled with Hagrid's style of speaking. I was a little worried about the dead unicorn in the Forbidden Forest, but he took it in stride. He likes to study the chapter titles and try to figure out what is going to happen next based on them (Maybe other people do this as well, I hardly ever pay attention to them. The one time I did, when reading The Amber Spyglass -I think it was the chapter Lyra and her Death - and I was kind of pissed off and anxious until I got to the chapter and realized the title wasn't a huge plot spoiler).

We took turns this morning reading the last chapter out loud. I had to stop and take a drink of coffee and compose myself when I got to Neville and his well-earned house points and how much he blossoms in the series. I felt a little stab of sadness every time I read about a character that won't be there by the end of book seven. I wonder how he will deal with those deaths. Fortunately he has several hundred pages ahead of him before the first one.

This weekend, the movie!

Andromeda Cast Down Her Sign & Vega Lights My Way

Rule of Threes: whatever you send out from yourself will come back threefold.

[the following text is lifted straight from the petition because I'm having trouble thinking up a title for this post, let alone construct a coherent sentence...]

"On Wednesday, June 25, 2008, during a live broadcast of a wedding reception on the TODAY Show, Kathy Lee Gifford gratuitously referred to Pagans as "nasty, bad Pagans." Ms. Gifford's hate speech has done harm to American Pagans' ability to live in peace with our neighbors of other faiths. By allowing her hate speech to be broadcast, her direct employer the TODAY Show, and their network, NBC, participate in that hate speech.

This is a petition calling for, at the very least, an on-air apology. A TODAY Show program devoted to dispelling misconceptions about Pagans and Paganism would go a long ways toward undoing the damage.

Signers of this petition are also putting the sponsor of that TODAY Show segment, Samsung, on notice that we are conducting a BOYCOTT against them until such time as we receive justice."

Basically, KLG decided to ad lib, rather than read a question straight from the stupid little wedding quiz they were doing on the Today Show. Instead of reading "pagans believe it was bad luck" she said "pagans, the nasty bad pagans, believed it was bad luck..."

Here is the video, if you can stomach watching her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anFqvwQoaR8

Here is the petition: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/quotnasty-bad-pagansquot-protesting-hate-speech-on-nbc

Seriously, would she have said that if it were any other religion? WTF?

Love the One You're With

I just needed to put this out there - it is something very close to my heart.

Many orphanages in China already struggle with maintaining basic standard living conditions - heat, water, etc. Several have been hit hard by the recent earthquake in Sichuan Province, and there are now many many more children left orphaned by the disaster. Here is an interesting (but difficult to read) map of the province and the orphanages in and around the epicenter and how they are faring.

The Half the Sky Foundation does some tremendous work in the orphanages in China, and they have set up an Earthquake Relief Fund. Donations can be made through Half The Sky via Global Giving. Donations will provide "direct aid to the thousands of children in welfare institutions and in the community who are suffering in the wake of devastating earthquakes in Sichuan Province and Chongqing. Donations will be used to provide emergency and long-term relief to children affected by the disaster."

I'll end with an appeal from Jenny Bowen, the Exec. Director of Half the Sky:

I now return you to your regularly scheduled Friday...

Giles!

I loved Anthony Stewart Head on Buffy - and found this interview via TV Squad and it sounds like he is up to some interesting things...

Can any Brits tell me about The Invisibles? Looks like it starts this week...

Looks like there may still be a Ripper movie floating around out there to clue us in on what Giles was up to before becoming a Watcher. He says:
"The latest is that I was over in LA last year at about this time. I bumped into Julie Gardner from BBC Wales who said 'has anything ever happened to that?' And at the same time I had just been speaking to Joss [Whedon] saying that there are a lot of people who keep asking about it. He said 'Is there anybody at the BBC I can talk to about it?' so I introduced him to Julie Gardner and they got on very well… and then the writers' strike happened and Fox picked up an idea of his called Dollhouse that he's doing with Eliza Dushku. So the answer is that there is a possibility of something happening… the story that he's written could adapt to being a one-off story not necessarily related to Buffy. All that means that there is the will and there is the means. It's a question of how, when and if it [comes together] through the next year or so."

and when asked 'Are you sworn to secrecy on the story details?' he says:
"Yes, in as much as I wouldn’t want to give it away. All I can say is that it’s a ghost story. But a ghost story with a real Joss Whedon difference. It’s got such a twist to it. But I wouldn't want to give it away. It would be the worst spoiler of all time."
*grins*

Also, or as I first typed, aslo... he is working on Merlin? For BBC? That could be cool, I love me some Arthurian legend.

All Your Diction Dripping With Disdain

Going to see Vampire Weekend tonight!

*happy dance*

They don't go on until 10pm. That is past my bedtime...LOL. I'd blame my inability to stay up and see a show on my age, but I'm pretty sure that at 21 I would have had a hard time staying awake in a dark bar waiting for the headlining band to go on, having of course gotten there early enough to snag a seat so I don't have to stand for two hours.

Take This Sinking Boat and Point it Home

Congrats to Glen and Marketa for taking home Best Song at the Oscars last night!! Their happiness was so genuine, and I love that Jon let her come back out and say what she wanted to say. You could just feel the crowd behind them. So awesome, I'm just thrilled.

If you haven't seen the movie Once yet, watch it. Watch it, watch it, watch it.
